For the Stockholm Cosmology exhibition, an installation consisting of eight mobiles was created. The central focus is on Rolf de Maré (1888-1964), the Swedish art collector and founder of Les Ballets Suédois in Paris, along with his partner, choreographer Jean Börlin (1893-1930). In addition to the two mobiles that evoke these two figures, six others reference some of the dance company’s productions, one of the most emblematic of the early 20th century.
The installation creates a narrative for Rolf and Jean and their company, which was, in many ways, a “synthesis of modern art.” They challenged traditional values, both in private life and on stage, innovating by blending dance, music, visual arts, poetry, and pantomime, with a particular emphasis on the figure of the androgynous male body, to create an experience of the total work of art.
In this installation, as in others, the mobiles, as portraits in motion, capture and transmit the essence of the figures they depict, inviting critical reflection on a specific moment in history.
